The permissions-system in Second Life can be a tricky thing to use; not giving enough permissions will cause that users are not able to use the albums, giving too much permissions may cause them to freely distribute your albums. We've tried to demystify it for you here.

The permissions for each item can be set in two ways:

  • In the general tab (edit object-window) when the object is rezzed; right click the object, select edit. (see screenshot 1)
  • Through "properties" when the object is in your inventory; right click the object in your inventory, select properties. (see screenshot 2)

Important

  • The Hermes system will not allow you to distribute your CDs as modifiable. This is to protect both your intellectual property, and our system.
  • The option "resell/give away" is most commonly referred to as "transfer".

Some scenarios

  • You just want to sell your CDs, and allow people to play them at their place.
    • Set permissions to no mod/copy/no transfer
    • Keep it copyable to people can never accidentally delete the CD when it's rezzed in-world. (they always have a fresh copy in their inventory)
  • You want the buyer to be able to play the CD themselves, or to give it away to friends.
    • Set permissions to no mod/no copy/transfer
    • People will be able to give the record away, but only once time. If you set this to copy too, people would be able to distribute your album for free. (or to resell it)
  • You would like to spread as many albums as possible, ie. as a freebie
    • Set permissions to no mod/copy/transfer
    • People will be able to give away the album, and to keep a copy of it themselves.
